FWTW Non-Profit Spotlight: Because Justice Matters

Here at From Water to Wine, we want to highlight the work of men and women making a difference in the world around them. This quarter’s non-profit spotlight is Because Justice Matters, an organization founded on meeting the needs of women and girls in the Tenderloin District of SF, CA.

Purposewho they are and who they serve

Because Justice Matters creates opportunities for women and girls in urban communities dealing with obstacles like poverty, isolation, and exploitation. Through community relationship building and focused programs and events, BJM seeks to bridge the gap.

“Through relationship, we remind women and girls of their true and intrinsic value, develop creative skills to stop cycles of poverty and violence, and highlight new possibilities for growth and change.” -BJM (quote from website)

BJM is a Christ-centered ministry that believes in the power of community as spaces for healing, growth, and change.

Plan how they serve and where they serve

BJM founder, Ruthie Kim, witnessed exploitation and isolation of women in the Tenderloin district while living and working there for 8 years. In 2008 the organization began raising awareness around issues of trafficking and domestic violence, launching their first Nail Day Outreach for women in the community. Since then, BJM has served women and girls in the Tenderloin district with street outreaches, parenting classes, healing groups, and more. They serve over 100 women and girls each month and impact 35 families each week in their community.

Provisionhow you can support their mission

There are numerous ways we can support this mission. BJM offers volunteer opportunities, leadership development, and job opportunities for those interested in serving. The organization also asks for prayers from those in support of their mission by hosting virtual prayer walks and prayer-focused activities outlined in their weekly newsletter.

“In urban communities like the Tenderloin, women and girls encounter unique obstacles that perpetuate a cycle of isolation. Poverty and exploitation prevent women and girls from dreaming of a better future, and the needs of these women and girls are consistently unseen and underserved. We are here to change that.” -BJM (quote from website)
